This page contains many books that I have found very helpful and would suggest to other parents. In each category, I have ordered the books from most useful (in my opinion) to the less useful yet still good. Cancer They Never Want to Tell You - Children Talk About Cancer by David Bearison, Ph.D. - This book includes children's narratives and discusses the thoughts, feelings, and worries of children with cancer. The exact words of the children are used to allow the reader to have a better feeling of what the child is saying. Difficulties of Parenting Children: The Challenge by Rudolf Dreikurs, M.D. - I found this book very helpful. I think that there needs to be an updated version, though, as some of the information is outdated. However, I think this book should be read by all parents. Raising Your Spirited Child by Mary Sheedy Kurcinka - I found this book the best of the books on raising difficult children. The next two on the list are "ok" compared to this (In MY opinion). However, others have suggested the next two, so I am going to add them. Parenting The Strong-Willed Child by Rex Forehand, Ph.D. and Nicholas Long, Ph.D. The Strong-Willed Child by Dr. James Dobson Emotions Raising an Emotionally Intelligent Child, The Heart of Parenting by John Gottman, Ph.D. I found this book extremely helpful. I would also suggest that ALL PARENTS READ THIS BOOK! General Parenting Children: The Challenge by Rudolf Dreikurs, M.D. - I found this book very helpful. I think that there needs to be an updated version, though, as some of the information is outdated. However, I think this book should be read by all parents. The Blessing of a Skinned Knee by Wendy Mogel, Ph.D. - Although this book is written from a Jewish point of view, I think that all parents, regardless of religious background will find this book helpful. I really loved it. Stupid Things Parents Do To Mess Up Their Kids Lives by Dr. Laura Schlessinger - Whether you like Dr. Laura or not, this book gives some good, paractical advice that parents NEED to know when it comes to raising their kids. Dr. Paula's Housecalls to Your Newborn by Dr. Paula Elbirt - This book offers general parenting advice to new mothers. 365 Ways To Get Your Child To Sleep by Dr. Paula Elbirt - This book contains some good advice for helping your child get to sleep. It also has a few silly ideas meant to make parents laugh. Loss The Fall of Freddie the Leaf by Leo Buscaglia - This book is about a leaf who sees that other leaves change colors, fall off their branches, and die. Freddie is afraid to die, and he learns to understand and then accept his own death at the end of the book. This is a great book to read to your child. Nutrition Dr. Paula's Good Nutrition Guide by Dr. Paula Elbirt - And, yes, I'm one of the parents who asked one of the questions published in the book. However, my child does eat very healthy foods most of the time. |
